Art of Book Reading |
How to Pick a Book?
So the first and foremost question is how to pick a book?
In this case, what I follow is Start Reading What You Like.
When I was not a reader then I picked some books that I think could be interesting. You can always start with it. Pick some books that you think, are your area of interest.
If you think you are not a reader but you’ve got an interest in book reading and you can read it easily then you can pick a book that comes in your area of learning.
So what I want to learn, where is my interest, and what excites me, choose a book that aligns with these things. And read.
Read 1-2 Pages at the Start
Now, you’ve got an idea about how I choose a book. Start with that and read 1-2 pages daily (for beginners). The more you read the more good it is.
Things I Follow
Now, let’s understand more book reading material that I use.
So I pick 3 books at a time from different genres.
One book I pick is very deep and I read a maximum of 3 pages for this book.
For the second book I read 10 pages and for the third book, it takes my maximum time. I read more than 50 pages of this book.
The first book, it’s Philosophical or spiritual.
The second book, it’s business/finance or productivity.
The third book, it’s a quick-read book for me. It could be a communication/Self-Help or productivity book. Sometimes fiction as well.
Write Notes at the End
On the last page, I write notes about what’s important in the book or what are some important quotes or tricks, or habits that I need to follow.
Share Your Thoughts
It’s very important to write in the book as well. It’s not a bad thing. If you come across a quote or a sentence where you think you need to share your thought then share your thought. If you feel like there is some connection then mention it in the book. So when you’ll pick it up later, you’ll eventually find your writing as well and that could be insightful on that day. You can also make art, cartoon, or doodle art in the book. That makes your book interesting as well.
Note Down Recommended Books
If you are reading a book then there’ll be some names mentioned in books as well, note that somewhere so that you can read it later.
If you like the author, search more about some other books about this author, if he/she is written more books then order that book too.
No Skimming
Many people use the skimming method, they don’t read what they think could not be valuable for them in the book. They skim the topic that they think is not relevant to them. I don’t like this thing personally. It could be a great habit. But for me, I read everything in the book because I want to understand the author’s perspective. And that is what is important for me.
Write Dates
When I start reading a book I mention the ‘start’ date on the book and when I finish the book I mention the ‘finish’ date as well.
But for some books, I use a different style.
When I think, for a book, that is very deep and I need to reread this book and it’ll always change its meaning then I mention the ‘start’ date and then 00
It’s like 30-06-2022 ------ 00
Symbols I Use
There are four symbols I use while reading a book.
First is ‘Hash #’- I use this symbol if I write something about any sentence or any quote, it is just my thought related to that topic that I’ve read. So I mention ‘#’ after underlining the sentence and at the above, I mention another ‘#’ and write my thought.
The second is ‘double-round’- I use two circles overlapping each other when I think something is important. I underline the sentence and at the side I mark double-round.
The third is the ‘sign of the star’- I use the ‘star’ sign when I think something is most important.
Fourth is ‘At the rate @’- I use this sign when I need to search more about a specific topic. If the writer has mentioned anything and I need to search more about that topic then I use the ‘@’ sign.
On Travelling
If you are a reader then you need books everywhere.
So while traveling, I use fiction books or I love poetry and Shayari so I pick books around these topics.
Other Important Things
1- Don’t read a book if you don’t like it.
2- Make a connection with the book, stay with that.
3- Keep different genres of books and pick a genre that you think you should read.
